Currently, based on the contract with FAO, Geo&Land is under development of the GIS module into the current version of the Kosovo Forest Information System.
Integration of the GIS module in KFIS will enable better management of spatial data by providing saving, analyzing, editing and displaying them more efficiently. For example, forest management module can manage management units at regional and municipal level, deciding which compartment – stand can be used for several activities like forest cutting, treatment, thinning, illegal logging, private and public ownership of parcels and always being associated with spatial data. Department of Inspections also will be able to manage parcel where inspection has been carried out or identifying illegal cutting. Department of hunting, pasture, eco-tourism will be able to manage biodiversity species, manage hunting ranges and assign hunting periods, set the ranges for species protection, monitoring. Logistics will be able to do online tracking of their mobility vehicles etc.
GIS module will provide the functionality for planning (design) of 10-year forest management plans, including the creation of spatial features (i.e. compartments, stands, plots, stand description, survey of trees, forest lines, forest roads, rivers, water resources etc.). Additionally, the GIS module will be able to manage online inventory via GPRS (3G) or through data exporting on mobile devices for offline inventory mode (reverse data synchronization with master database).
The project is expected to be completed in the end of November 2017.
